Nationally recognized plein air artists have been invited to capture the spirit and charm of our mountains with paint and canvas. Artists will be painting gorgeous landscapes, mountain scenes, graceful waterfalls, beside lakes and streams and throughout the streets of Cashiers Valley and the surrounding area. Plein air is about capturing the light and the nuance of life in a natural outdoor setting. The following nationally recognized plein air artists are coming to our part of the Western North Carolina Mountains to paint and preserve our history in this picturesque area.
Tricia Bass - Golden, CO Award winning American impressionist, Tricia Bass paints with a vibrant, expressive, Russian influenced style. "As a child I was always running around outside barefoot and wild. Now I find it amazing and miraculous that I actually get paid to be outdoors, painting this magnificent Western landscape." Bass strives to express mood and emotion in her work with the use of color, light and form. She calls Colorado home and shows her work at Elk Horn Gallery in Winter Park, Mountain Home in Evergreen, and Link Gallery in Cheyenne, WY. Bass has a B.A. in Fine Art from the University Of Florida and has studied extensively at Sahli School of Art.
Gary Baughman - Marietta, GA Gary Baughman is a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was an Air Force pilot and flew missions worldwide. Afterward Gary augmented his latent art talent by enrolling in private lessons and workshops with some of America's foremost artists. He is skilled in watercolor, oil, and Gary's medium of choice, pastels. His works have won prizes in National Juried Shows nationwide since 1993. Gary lives adjacent to the Kennesaw National Battlefield in Marietta, Georgia. This ideal location offers Baughman easy access to landscape subject matter that is his first love for paintings.
Roger Dale Brown, OPA - Franklin, TN Originally studied in many places across the United States. These experiences as well as history, nature, and architecture inspire his oil paintings. Roger is an avid 'plein air' painter and has traveled coast-to-coast painting the beautiful scenery across our country. He also paints selected figurative and still life's.
Roger's oil paintings have been displayed in galleries throughout the U.S. and have won many awards. He's donated paintings for select charity fundraisers and his works are owned by private collectors across the country. Roger believes in capturing the essence of his subjects and instills this in his students.
Luke Buck - Neneveh, INLuke Buck grew up in Indiana with a love for life, art and nature that is evident in his nostalgic paintings of Americana landscapes and wildlife. He was raised in a family of artists and most of his art education and influence came from training he received from his artist father Harold Buck . He studied figure drawing at the John Heron Art Institute while attending Arsenal Technical High School.
Luke launched his art career in 1959 as commercial artist and by 1982 his interest had evolved entirely to the fine arts. He has worked in many different mediums, but his favorite is Watercolor.
Jim Carson - Saluda, NCJim Carson has been painting in both oil and acrylic for over 20 years. He was the managing partner in the law firm of Chambless , Higdon and Carson, in Macon, Ga., where he practiced law for 31 years. Although always interested in drawing, even at an early age, his interest in art lay dormant while law school, marriage, raising a family, and building a law practice took precedent. About 20 years ago, Jim's wife gave him a painting course for Christmas, and Jim has never looked back. This journey culminated in July, 2003, when Jim retired from law practice, moved to Saluda, N.C., and now paints full time. Jim gives "plein" air workshops through out the southeastern U.S.
Ann Caudle - Huntsville, ALBorn in New England into a very mobile Navy family, I traveled all over the US and settled in Huntsville, AL while a college student working at the Marshall Space Flight Center. I am a former rocket scientist, teacher, computer programmer, backstage theater techie and sailplane pilot. My journey goes on.
I continue to travel and try to capture the beauty and character of the places I visit. My painting style shows my love for the "act of painting". In my landscapes I try to capture the light and magic of the moment with energetic and color rich brush strokes. I can't imagine doing anything else.
Katie Cundiff - Bradenton, FL
Susan Doubleday - Chatanooga, TN Spending many years as a watercolor artist, Susan Doubleday has recently found that using the vibrant colors of pastels allows her to depict the light and color of the landscape in a more colorful, impressionistic way. She has won a number of awards in pastel exhibitions. Pastels have become her medium of choice, allowing her to bring colors in the shadows and light of the landscape into her paintings.
Beverly Ford Evans - Franklin, TNBeverly is a native of Nashville, Tennessee. As a child she was drawn to the beauty that surrounded her. Encouraged by her parents, she began drawing and painting. As an adult Beverly has become a prolific artist. She has studied with accomplished artist Roger Dale Brown,OPA, Dawn Whitelaw, Paula Frizbe and Jeremy Lipking.
What inspired Beverly to return to her love of painting, after a carrier in interior design, was the beauty of her home state. Tennessee is abundant in natural beauty and history. Beverly captures its essence and shares it through her paintings.
Mary Erickson - Marshville, NCRaised along the New England coast in Connecticut, conservationist Mary Erickson has been painting since childhood. Erickson studied at the University of Bridgeport and Sacred Heart University, and initially pursued a career in business management. A move to Florida in 1986, stirred the desire to pursue her love of art. She began an intense, self-directed study of nature and painting, supplemented with week-long painting workshops with contemporary artists. Through dedication and hard work, she realized a long held dream, and in 1993 Mary began painting professionally. Since 1998 Mary has maintained studios in Marshville, NC and Venice, FL. Preferring to work on location, in the tradition of painters since the French Impressionists of the 1800's.
Peggy Everett - St. Simons IslandPeggy was born in New York and raised in Atlanta, but now resides on St. Simons Island in Georgia.
She sold her first painting at the age of 15 of a horse named Smokey. Peggy studied portrait oil painting with Roman, Constantine, and Mark Chatov and also at the New York Studio School under Graham Nickson and Joseph Santore. She teaches plein air workshops and is currently involved in equine rescue on the Tidal Islands, The Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia, and various charities for children.
Peggy paints 5-6 days a week and likes to ride, fly fish, golf and kayak.
Trey Finney - Spartanburg, SCBorn and raised in South Carolina, Trey Finney first attended the College of Charleston but transferred to the Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, FL where he graduated with a degree in Illustration. After two years of working as an architectural illustrator, he was hired by Walt Disney Feature Animation and spent the next fifteen years as an animator. Disney offered continuing education classes including film and film design, acting, drawing and painting. Painting inspired a more personal journey and the decision to leave the animation field and pursue a full time career in fine art. His paintings convey a style he refers to as "Natural Impressions". They reflect what he has learned about painting and what he sees.
Bill Farnsworth - Venice, FLBill Farnsworth is a nationally known illustrator and fine artist. Born in Norwalk Connecticut in 1958, Bill is member of The Society of Illustrators, SCBWI, Oil Painters of America, The National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society and The American Impressionist Society. His work is represented by The Hughes Gallery, Carlton Gallery, Elder Fine Art Gallery and The Courtyard Gallery of Fine Art. Bill currently lives in Venice, Fl. with his wife Debbie .
John Brian Guernsey - Marietta, GAOriginally from California, landscape artist, John Brian Guernsey, moved to Georgia in 1993 and transitioned to an art career in 2006. Having developed his drawing skills through college and workshops he now concentrates primarily on landscape painting. Impressed by the great western landscape artists, past and present, he seeks to combine those influences into his own vision of southern landscapes and cityscapes. Working primarily in oil, and plein air, Mr. Guernsey's work reveals a keen observance of atmosphere and color, and is inspired both by his love of nature, and his interest in city life and architecture.

Mary earned a Bachelors of Fine Art from the Cleveland Institute of Art in Ohio. With portrait painting commissions dominating her career, her portrait clients include notable actors, models, sports personalities and business leaders. Universities also display Mary's work honoring their department founders and teachers. In addition, Mary has taught fine art classes and has received many awards.
In 2005, Mary discovered painting "En Plein Air" and realized its own exciting challenges. In 2006, she joined the intimate painting group now known as The Sullivan's Island Plein Air Painters. Although painting portraits is still a large part of Mary's repertoire, painting "en plein air" has expanded her artistic experience in every positive way.
Jon Houglum - Franklin, NCJon was born and raised in northern Minnesota. He served in the U.S. Army 1966-1969, serving in Viet Nam in 1968-1969. He graduated from Moorhead State University, Moorhead, Minnesota with a B.S. Degree in Art Education in 1972. He studied under Anonias Raemaechers (A Dutch Master painter) 1976-1980. While in Indiana he studied portraits and figures at the John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis 1978-1980. Jon has taught oil painting publicly and privately for over 30 years. Jon has been a resident of Macon County, North Carolina since 1996.
William Jameson - Saluda, NCBorn in 1944 in Honea Path, South Carolina, William Jameson has always felt strong ties to the South. After studying with Frank Rampola at the Ringling College of Art in Florida, Jameson continued his studies while teaching landscape painting and life drawing as a graduate assistant at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
Bill's passion for nature allows him to create introspective landscapes embodying a full range of local color and timeless contrasts. His energy is apparent in his painting style, incorporating heavy applications of paint with strong brushstrokes. Bill''s technique instill his paintings with a sense of movement, echoing the recurring theme of natural cycles and change, inherent in his subject matter.
Russell Jewell - Easley, SCRussell Jewell is an artist/educator from Easley, South Carolina. For more than twenty-seven years he has carved a career out of the combining forces of art and education. Jewell is a signature member of the S.C. Watermedia Society, the National Watercolor Society and the Transparent Watercolor Society of America. Jewell has work published in the North Light Publications: Watercolor Discoveries 2004, Watercolor Secrets 2006, Passionate Brushstrokes 2008. Jewell is slated to have two works published in the Splash 11 New Directions scheduled out June 2010. The Artist Magazine published Dr. Jewell in January 2005 and he was a featured artist with Watercolor Artist Magazine in June of 2009. In 2008 Jewell received a US patent for his Jewell Box plein air viewfinder.
Kaaren Lundeen - Brevard, NCPennsylvania born Kaaren Lundeen earned a BFA at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. in 1979. In 2003, Kaaren retired from her fast paced career as a lead Disney character artist. She had two, sell out, 'One Woman' water color shows in 1997 and 1999, and most recently won first prize for her water color from Connestee Art Club. Now she is as much at home painting in the east while living in Brevard, as she is painting in the west, while living in Pasadena using water colors and oils to tell her stories.
Wendy Musser - Cary, NCWendy is a native of Greensboro, NC. She obtained an AA from Peace College and a BFA form the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. After years of working in art related fields, in 2001 Wendy began "plein air" painting. She is a member of the Fine Arts League of Cary and the Pastel Society of NC. She has been juried into the Triangle Artists Guild and is a juried Associate Member of the Pastel Society of America. Her works can be seen at The Mahler Fine Art in Raleigh, NC, and at The Little Gallery on Smith Mountain Lake, VA.
Rich Nelson - Tryon, NCHailing from Detroit, Michigan, Rich Nelson earned his BFA from the College Of Creative Studies in 1988. He is an award-winning portrait and gallery artist residing in the mountains of North Carolina. Though portraiture is a major part of his career, he also loves painting landscape, still life, and figurative gallery pieces. He is endlessly fascinated by people, places, and things and considers it a privilege and a challenge to capture some aspect of their essence on canvas. All of this work (except some portraiture) is done exclusively from life.
Richard Oversmith - Asheville, NCRichard received formal training in Fine Art and Illustration at Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan. While at Kendall he was invited to study at the Royal College of Art in London, England. There he gained experience in plein air painting and found direction in his work as an oil painter.
The natural beauty of Western North Carolina has proven to offer infinite inspiration for Richard's impressionistic landscapes. His purpose in painting is to provoke the viewer to interact with his pieces. His paintings are his voice, and stroke by stroke, he composes a whole that relates his vision.
Morgan Samuel Price - Alamonte Springs, FLMorgan Samuel Price's landscapes are composed of keen observation and observed fact. Masterful technique and love of paint allows her to express feelings for light and shadow cast by the moving sun. The work has a freshness and delight of the artist's faith in nature.
Jean Stern PhD., Executive Director for the Joan Irvine Smith Museum of California Impressionists writes: "Morgan Samuel Price is among the best of the true plein air painters of today, that is to say, artists who paint outdoors with the full conviction that the only way to capture the true, fluid effect of natural light is to paint outdoors, amidst that specific light."
Robin Roberts - Decatur, ALAn Alabama native, Robin finds nobility in everyday scenes and focuses on the drama and mystery found in commonplace southern landscapes. She enjoys the delicate time of day and captures it through vigorous brushwork, delicate touches, subtle color combinations and unusual compositions. Collectors are captivated by those places you know by heart. Robin was introduced and inspired to plein air work by several national and regional artists.
