DESCRIPTION:Description: Join wildlife biologist Justin McVey to explore the fascinating history and biology of coyotes in North Carolina. The presentation will trace coyotes’ natural migration and human-assisted expansion throughout North Carolina\, highlight coyotes’ adaptability in diverse habitats\, and debunk common myths regarding their diet and feeding behaviors.  We will discuss effective non-lethal management techniques for reducing human-coyote conflicts\, emphasizing that eradication is not a feasible or necessary solution\, and discuss why public education is essential to  manage fear and conflicts. \nPresenter Bio: Justin McVey is the mountain regional district wildlife biologist for the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. Justin has a Bachelor of Science degree in zoology from North Carolina State University and also obtained his Master of Science in wildlife and conservation biology there studying the food habits of coyotes and red wolves in Eastern North Carolina. We’ll look at how excessive nighttime lighting disrupts sleep cycles\, impacts animals\, and alters natural rhythms that have existed for millennia. We’ll also focus on practical solutions. You’ll learn simple\, effective ways to reduce light pollution at home and in your neighborhood—strategies that can improve your health\, lower energy costs\, and help restore the night sky for everyone. \nPresenter Bio: Stephan Martin is an astronomer\, educator\, and author who helps people reconnect with the natural world through the night sky. He has taught astronomy\, physics\, and sustainability at colleges\, universities\, and learning centers for over thirty-five years\, and has worked as an instrument specialist for the Hubble Space Telescope and as Observatory Supervisor at Williams College\, where he joined global eclipse expeditions studying the solar corona. Through talks and stargazing experiences\, he invites audiences to rediscover the beauty and importance of dark skies.

The world of fireflies is full of trickery\, romance\, and awe\, so join us as we illuminate the mysteries of these amazing insects!   \nPresenter Bio: Sara Rivera (she/they) is a former Insect Curator for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and a graduate student in the Biology department of WCU. Their thesis research focuses on the evolution of tropical\, predatory fireflies. SUMMARY:Village Nature Series: Wildlife of the Southeast-The creation of a regional field guide and what I learned along the way
DESCRIPTION:Sam is excited to join the Village Nature Series to share photographs\, stories\, and odd things he’s found in the woods while working on his field guide. He will share about finding alligator nests\, watching mother sea turtles lay eggs on the beach\, watching red wolves and black bears at the same time\, and how following a Florida panther trail led him to a Florida panther. By the end of the talk\, he will hopefully have shown you that the exploration of the natural world’s inhabitants through the lens of wildlife tracking is the best scavenger hunt you’ve ever participated in (and it never ends). \nPresenter Bio: Sam Giovanetti is a wildlife tracker\, writer\, and photographer living in Madison County\, NC. He holds a Professional Track & Sign  Certification from Tracker Certification North America. He has completed thru-hikes of the Appalachian Trail (2011)\, the Pacific Crest Trail (2017)\, and paddled the entire Suwannee River (2022).  He has worked as a teacher\, a wolf tracker\, a rabbit scat collector\, a snow shoveler\, an arborist\, and a gas station clerk. He holds a degree in biology from Appalachian State University in NC. DESCRIPTION:Join us welcoming The Wondering Hours to the Commons Stage! \nBased in Tampa Bay\, Florida\, The Wandering Hours are an original take on traditional American string music combining old-time\, early bluegrass\, and folk into a dancey and lyrically deep band that always entertains fans of string music and first-time listeners. Formed in 2018\, they harness powerful lyrics and uplifting melodies using fiddle\, mandolin\, banjo\, guitar\, and upright bass.  They write original music in this vein\, as well as playing some of the important songs and tunes from these eras.   \nGroovin’ on The Green is FREE and takes place rain or shine on the Commons Lawn at The Village Green. Food and beverage vendors will be available at each concert and concert-goers are welcome to bring their own picnics and coolers. Please bring your own lawn chairs and blankets; personal tents are not allowed at Groovin’. \nGroovin’ on The Green is free and open to the public\, however\, donations are collected to directly support The Village Green\, a 501c3 nonprofit park system that relies on grants and donations to offer our programming. Your donation helps keep Groovin’ on The Green alive year after year!
