Big things are happening at The Village Green

The Village Green is holding a Bare Boards Party on Sunday, June 14 at 4 PM on the former site of the Summit Charter School. The entire community is invited to come enjoy food, music, children's crafts, hot air balloon rides over the green and learn about the plans for the site.

The party is to be "bare boards" in order to bring attention to this site as a future multipurpose open-air facility. Village Green Board member and acting co-chair, architect Dan Duckham, will be on site to explain the plans. The drawings below illustrate the potential of the site with its four existing turrets and covered walkways. These structures remain intact after the former Summit Charter School classrooms were removed. Summit recently moved to its new campus on Zeb Alley Road after 10 years at The Village Green.

Plans call for a large grassy lawn in the former courtyard. The removal of a portion of the old boardwalk enables the future lawn to open into the adjoining Village Green woodland and walkways. The "Great Lawn" will provide a 75'x150' grassy area for daytime play, concerts and various open-air events similar to those currently held at the Crossroads. This area can easily accommodate a large 60'x120' tent for large community events and parties.

The four existing turrets can provide 23'x23' meeting rooms, slide/lecture facilities, set-up for benefit meals and lockable space during events. Each turret needs remodeling to achieve this purpose, thus The Village Green has giving options for someone wanting to "Adopt a Turret".

The site was slated for complete obliteration according to the original plans. But in the Fall of 2008, as the school prepared to move, Village Green chair, Wesley Wofford and architect, Duckham, reviewed the site to determine what, if anything, was salvageable. They determined that the condition of the turrets and boardwalks was good. This gave rise to the thought of repurposing and recycling rather than removal.

Now the VG Board is embarking on the challenging task of making the addition to the green possible. According to Mary Palmer Dargan, ASLA who is interim co-chair of the VG Board with Duckham, (VG Chair, Wofford is temporarily out-of-state on a film assignment.) "The Village Green is completely community supported. The Joy Garden Tour, held bi-annually, is our largest source of funds. We also have Greenie Membership Dues and other Patronage levels. It may come as some surprise to the community, but we usually run out of funds around May every other year. The Joy Garden Tour funds are crucial to our existence."

Events at the party include hot air balloon rides, compliments of VG Board member Brian Renfro of RE/MAX Summit Properties. A pot painting station for children to decorate recycled pots, strolling blue grass musicians, yummy food and refreshments and information about The Village Green. VG Greenie membership packages will be available for those who have not yet renewed or joined for 2009. Watch "The Giving Tree" come to life. Help the future unfold by bringing your children, dogs, family and friends to the Frank Allen Road site on Sunday, June 14 from 4-8 PM.
