Leif Johnson has been making forged steel and blown glass sculptures for the last twenty years. Nature has been a main inspiration for his creations. He has recently begun a series of stone and forged steel indoor/out furniture.
Leif studied architecture at the Massachusetts College of Art for three years before finding his voice in sculpture and glass. "It was a very natural transition for me to work in a more immediate and three-dimensional way through sculpture". After receiving BFA's in sculpture and glass from MCA, Leif converted an old dairy barn into a glass shop and a coal storage shed into a blacksmithing shop in Hebron, NY, where he lives with his wife and daughter.
Over the last 5 years Leif has helped create and build Salem Art Works, a non-profit art school/ sculpture park in Salem, NY, where he is currently the director of the glass program and teaches both glassblowing and blacksmithing. His work has been shown in galleries and sculpture parks nation-wide. He is currently making a forged steel and stone gate for Lock 5 on the Champlain Canal.
