Roger Halligan has been creating sculpture since the mid seventies. He received his MFA with honors in Studio Arts from the University of Georgia in 1977. He formed Two Oaks Studio with his artist partner Jan Chenoweth and in 2007 was awarded an ArtsMove Chattanooga Grant to relocate their home and studio to Chattanooga, TN.
His present sculpture is strongly influenced by the megalithic stone constructions that existed in many parts of the prehistoric world but most specifically those found in the British Isles, France and Ireland. "I am drawn to these structures not only because they are some of the earliest large scale sculpture and architecture but also because they continue to have a strong impact on the modern viewer. They are a real part of our mysterious Neolithic origins and continue to fascinate us. For many, including myself, they initiate a strong emotional response."
"I make my art with steel and concrete, manmade materials found commonly in our contemporary world. The constraints and freedoms of our culture make these materials as available, accessible and reasonable for me to use as were the colossal stones used by pre historic peoples at sites like Carnac, Avebury or New Grange. My need and rational for making these works is similar I feel to those of my Neolithic ancestors. It is about making a place extraordinary. I hope my work not only activates the real, sensual, physical environment around it but also acts as an invitation to the viewer to experience the metaphysical even mystical environments they may associate with it."
